Will Open Houses be a thing of the past???

Will Open Houses become a thing of the past? After the horrific crime against the September 2014 kidnapping and murder of an Arkansas Real Estate Agent many think Open Houses/sign call showings are to dangerous. I must remind you that I am 3rd generation Realtor and can remember my family doing open houses every weekend. We also must remember that was for the last 30 years. Now days every buyer has access to Twitter, websites, Instagram, Linkedin, Facebook and so many other avenues to view homes on the market that it makes the need for open houses much less significant.  Do we think putting our signs all over a neighborhood and advertising all over the internet saying " Hi everyone, we will be alone in a house on 12th st form 1-4 please stop by" is the safest thing? Most buyers or "looky loos" who come into an open house haven't even been pre-approved yet. Realtors need to take charge of their business and meet clients at the office and explain the necessary documents to get them ready to search for their dream home. Getting a sign call from a complete stranger and running out to show a stranger a home is not the safest avenue. Frankly, we are not even serving the client well by not sitting them down at the office to talk about what they are looking for. I know in our office we have new procedures for showing properties to potential buyers to keep everyone safe. If buyers don't like new procedures than they probably weren't a real buyer anyhow. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years to Open Houses.
